Individual rhino identification

Individual rhinos can be identified from a number of features including

• sex
• body size, including the size of a calf in relation to the mother
• the size and shape of the front and rear horns
• unique features of the ears
• the facial wrinkle patterns
• prominent scars and sores on the body
• tail abnormalities

Age

The age of the calf can be estimated in comparison to its mother.

Five age classes have been defined for the calf (see picture).

Horn shape

Horn differences are visually identified.

Identification databases for each rhino can be made up from photographs of the face view,
right profile and left profile.
