Dr Petra Campbell

Dr Petra Campbell is an independent Wildlife Naturalist. She has a PhD based on establishing a market analysis system. With a life-long interest in wildlife, she has travelled widely in Africa observing animal behaviour. Following a meeting with Dr Patton on a research project in Kenya, she offered her expertise to assist with, develop and improve the data collection and analysis systems being used on reserves.

With a background in computer based analysis systems, she established a data entry management system for both Solio Game Reserve and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary with automated analysis and reporting facilities. She has particular interest in individual lion, giraffe and rhino monitoring and identification.

In addition to her specialist knowledge, with a wide ranging knowledge of Africa's wildlife she is often to be seen in the field acting as either a trainer and/or a guide to rangers and tourists.

Fully conversant with GIS mapping, she undertakes such work as appropriate including Crime Data Analysis. She is a co-author to many of the PACHYDERM papers of Dr Patton.

Recently, she has used her expertise in support of giraffe conservation working for, or in collaboration with, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). In Kenya, she is the lead researcher in the Mara region undertaking population surveys, based on individual identification by photographs, concentrating on the Community Conservancies. In Uganda, she worked with the GCF/Dartmouth College giraffe project in Murchison Falls National Park maintaining the population database.
